CHATGPT DOT GUIDE / SETUP

Set up a dot around one clear responsibility.

Create your dot on desktop, connect only what its first job needs, and review one bounded result before adding more access or recurring work.

01 / BEFORE SETUP

Check current access first

OpenAI says rollout is gradual, so an eligible account may not see dots immediately. Current documentation lists eligible Pro users over 18 outside the EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland; Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide, and an Enterprise administrator must enable the feature.

Do not change plans based on this page alone. Check the access section in OpenAI's current dots documentation because plans, regions and rollout status can change.
02 / CREATE

Start on a desktop

  1. Open dots in the ChatGPT desktop app or in a desktop browser and follow the introduction. During our October 8 browser check, the localized entry was labeled “工作” and its composer said “ChatGPT Work,” so your interface may not display the word “dot.”
  2. Choose a name and appearance. These do not define its permissions or responsibilities.
  3. Skip optional app connections if you have not yet chosen a first job.
  4. Use the desktop app if you want to consider connecting your own computer. That access is optional and separate.

After setup, the same dot can be available in the mobile app when the supporting update is available. Mobile web is not supported in the current official documentation.

03 / CONNECT

Add the minimum source needed

ConnectionUse it whenFirst check
Plugin/appThe job needs information or actions in a service such as email, files or GitHub.Confirm the connected account and whether it can read, write or send.
Messaging channelYou want updates or conversation in Slack or Teams.Confirm the audience and which channel the dot may use.
Local computerThe job genuinely needs local files, apps or supported local tasks.Keep the device online with the ChatGPT app open; review what is in scope.

These connections are separate. Adding a Slack contact method does not connect an inbox, plugin or computer.

04 / FIRST RESPONSIBILITY

Use a responsibility brief

BOUNDARY-FIRST TEMPLATE
Responsibility: Keep [specific result] current for [duration].

Use only: [approved sources or connected apps].
Check when: [schedule or event]. Include my time zone.
Tell me when: [specific change, risk, or decision].
Keep routine updates in: [location].

Do not send, publish, purchase, delete, change an account, or share information with another person. Prepare drafts for my review.

For each update, include the source, what changed, what you could not verify, and the next decision needed. Confirm the responsibility, schedule, sources, and approval boundaries before starting.

05 / REVIEW BEFORE EXPANDING

Check the first result

Only widen access after the dot performs the narrow job consistently and you can explain why the next permission is necessary.
